Dr. H. (Howard) Fan, h.fan@uc.edu

Dr. Fan obtained his Diploma in Electrical Engineering from Guizhou University, China, in 1976; and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, both in Electrical Engineering in 1982 and 1985, respectively. From 1977 to 1978, he worked as a Research Engineer at a Provincial Standard Laboratory in China. He received the C.R. Allen award at the University of Illinois in 1983. Dr. Fan joined the ECE Department at the University of Cincinnati in 1985 as an Assistant Professor, and became a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in 1996. In 1994 he spent six months as a visiting researcher at the Systems and Control Group, Uppsala University, Sweden.

Research Interests

Dr. Fan's research interests are in Adaptive Signal Processing, Blind Equalization, Digital and Wireless Communications, Systems Theory, and System Identification. Dr. Fan was funded for an extended period in the past mainly by the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research for various research projects on adaptive signal processing. He is currently funded by the Army Research Office and industry for projects in wireless multiuser communications. He has been responsible for developing the "Adaptive Signal Processing" research laboratory.

Dr. Fan earned the Distinguished Progress in Teaching Excellence Award from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Cincinnati in 1987. He has published a number of research papers in national and international journals and conference proceedings. Dr. Fan is a senior member of IEEE, a member of Tau Beta Pi and Phi Kappa Phi. He is also a past associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing.
