What We Do in the Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science


The Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science prepares students to excel and lead in the 21st century. We offer a unique combination of technical and engineering degrees in the fields of Computer and Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering Technology. 

Our students use science to understand how the world works. Our graduates have satisfying careers with diverse opportunities for work assignments, employers, and locations. Because they graduate with both a strong academic foundation and a great deal of real-world experience acquired through our cooperative education program, our graduates are highly sought-after in industry and research.

All of our engineers use science to understand how the world works by building models and testing them. Our Engineering students learn how to design build things to meet human needs and are more likely to mathematically model complex systems. Our Technology students have a more “hands-on” focus to their studies. Technology students use and/or apply practical sciences to industry or commerce.

Computer & Electrical Engineering student

Computer Engineers develop advancements in radio, television, radar, transistors, computers, and robotics. They work with operating systems, computer architecture, computer networks, robotics, artificial intelligence, and computer-aided design.

They specialize in the following areas:

Computing: Software & Programming, Computers & Hardware, Digital Systems, Operating Systems, Databases, Algorithms, VLSI

Computer Scientists design and build computational information processing systems, used in all aspects of society, by following scientific theories of computation.  They develop software, algorithms, data management and analysis systems, and advance the field of computation to solve real-world problems.

They specialize in the following areas:

Software & Programming, Programming Languages, Operating Systems, User Interface Design, Cloud Computing, Mobile Systems Development, Web-based Systems, Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, Computer Networks, Databases, Computer Graphics, Parallel Computation, Design and Analysis of Algorithms, Formal Methods, Computer and Cybersystems Security

Electrical Engineers shape the design and manufacturing processes for microelectronics, control systems, signal processing, space systems, lasers and photonics, and many other forms of technology that impact the quality of our lives. They are at the forefront of advances in biomedicine, renewable energy, intelligent systems, and nanotechnologies.

They specialize in the following areas:

Systems: Signal Processing, Controls, Telecommunications, Embedded Systems

Electronics: Materials, Devices, Electronics, Circuits, Instrumentation, Integrated Circuits, Solid State Devices, Electromagnetics, Microwave, Photonics

Electrical Engineering Technologists design and work with electrical and electronic equipment, electric power generation and transmission, automatic control theory and implementation, robotic control, modern instrumentation, and sensors.

They specialize in the following areas:

Design and analysis of analog and digital circuits, electric power systems, digital and analog electronic communication, telecommunications, and industrial control.
